Kauai
Christian Fellowship- Tools for the Journey of Faith with
our community.
Our History-
Kauai Christian Fellowship is actually a youth ministry
gone berserk. Our founding leaders felt that there needed
to be a church on the island that put a high priority on
reaching youth and their families. In September of 1991 we
held our first meeting at Koloa School and soon thereafter
rented out space in Rainbow Plaza where we met in cramped
conditions until October of 2002 when we moved into our
current new campus in Poipu. Since our founding, Kauai
Christian Fellowship has remained a non-denominationl
Christian church...but we happily hang out with believers
of various Christian backgrounds.
Our Leadership-
The lunatics truly do run the asylum. Kauai Christian
Fellowship is an actual Elder run church but it is the
extreme and different combination of gifts and
personalities that make the leadership team so dynamic. (If
you think of the crew of The Wind & The Willows, you
get the picture; we have toads, moles, rats and badgers on
the team) All our leaders have been drawn from the
congregation and most have a long history on the island.
Our current Pastoral leadership team consists of Rick
Bundschuh, Tom Finley, Dain Spore, and Mike Wellman, along
with Justin Bundschuh overseeing youth ministry. Rick, Tom,
and Mike are all founding Elders. If you are not familiar
with the idea of an Elder run church, the "elders" of the
New Testament church were the "pastors" (Ephes.4:11),
"bishops or overseers" (Acts 20:28), "leaders" and
"rulers"(Hebrews 13:7; 1Thes.5:12) of the flock. Everywhere
in the New Testament bishop and presbyter are titles given
to one and the same officer of the Christian Church. We
meet every Tuesday morning at 6am and when we have
decisions to be made we strive for unanimity among the
team. Because we meet so regularly, KCF tends to be a
"plan/go" type of place instead of a committee-laden
entity. We are also advised in financial matters by the
F.A.T. boys (Financial advisory team) who give us solid
business perspective when desired.
What makes us tick-
We get real fired up about the core of timeless Christian
beliefs; like the things mentioned in the ancient creeds of
the church. And of course we are deeply committed to the
Bible as God's revealed message to human beings. We think
that the church comes into the building to worship and be
challenged or encouraged and then goes out to be the
"church" at home, at work or in school. We love our new
building but know it isn't really the church but rather a
place where the church meets. We love to worship God and
are always looking for new ways to connect people to God in
that way. We believe there is strength in diversity and
something invigorating about never quite knowing what to
expect. So you will find we often have different styles of
contemporary music, different speakers and even celebrate
giving the "unpolished" a shot to grow their gifts and
skills. When we get together for worship gatherings or
other community things we practice those things that are
clearly taught or modeled in the Bible. And we avoid stuff
that causes confusion, theological controversy or makes
people think we are nutty. But you are free to do nutty
stuff in the comfort of your own home. Just don't try to
get disciples.
We try to form our Sunday gatherings to connect to our
whole family of faith; those new in Christ, those who have
been believers for years, the young, the old, the simple
and those with an academic mind set. And we hope that
things are put in such a way that those who are seeking
after a relationship with God will understand. You can
expect to find teachings on most Sundays a blend of
elementary and profound, Biblical yet not so theological as
to be impratical in everyday life. We are pretty big on
using multimedia, story and object lessons so don't let it
scare you. If you tell us you are a believer in Jesus we
take you at your word and welcome you to be part of our
fellowship. So much for our membership policy. We figure
that if you are clueless as to what a believer really is
you will figure it out pretty soon by hanging out with us
and become the genuine article. We aren't looking for
pretty or perfect people. We don't mind helping you get
your life untangled. We do think it is important for those
who are part of the church to support what God is doing
here by giving of their time, talent and treasure. But we
don't set a percentage for any of that stuff and we just
trust that God will turn each person, in due time, from
being mere "tippers" to sacrificial givers and committed
workers. Along that line please not that our financial
books are open to anyone in the body and our budget is a
family affair renewed each year. (We currently have a
weekly budget of around $5,800)
We are into kids and their families. Our ministries towards
young people are a hallmark of Kauai Christian Fellowship.
We take this resposibility very seriously. For example, we
think it is a sin to bore a kid (or an adult for that
matter) and so we do whatever it takes to keep our youth
ministry and kids programs attractive and meaningful to
each age level. We put lots of our time and resources into
kids. We think it is worth it in the long
run.
Connection points- are key to the Kauai Christian
Fellowship spiritual growth strategy. As our church gets
larger, it will be harder and harder to truly know
people...unless we get into a small accountability group.
We call some of these small groups "Base Camps" and they
are springing up all the time. In addition we have other
small group opportunities such as women/men's Bible study
groups, one to one discipleship, hula/signing and maybe
even a forthcoming biker group.
Opportunities & Responsibilities-
Folks at KCF have the 100% support of the staff to try out
new and even crazy ideas. Naturally we ask you to plan
carefully and have clear goals and objectives that are in
line with the heartbeat of the church. But it is easy to
get the green light from our leadership team. What doesn't
work so well is to come to us with your big idea and expect
us to implement it for you. We have enough big ideas of our
own. We also expect that each person who belongs to KCF
will in some way use the gifts, resources and talents that
God has given them to serve this community of faith. In
practical terms that means things like teaching Sunday
School, helping with meals, hosting Bible study groups,
sweeping up, riding the vacuum cleaner, playing in the
band, helping drive kids to camp, kicking down the extra
cash it takes to do some ministry, emptying trash cans or
digging up the weeds. We ask that every member of our
family seek to grow and stretch spiritually, that they make
themselves accountable to other believers and that they
carry their weight in our community (unless they get into a
personal train wreck in which case we will jump in and help
carry them around until they are back to
health).
If you are looking for a place to help we have lots of
them. Here are a few spots you can start
with:
Audio Visual
- We need folks who love to twiddle knobs, play with
lights, sound and mess with video and computers. We are up
for big dreams in this area. See Rick, Dain or Jim
Pilgram.
Divine Nuisance
- A new ministry idea that is designed to bless people who
are not part of our congregation by honoring them, serving
them or doing something special for them, thus making
ourselves a divine nuisance in the community (known for our
good deeds and reputation). See Rick or Kellie McEvoy if
you are interested in being part of this hit squad of
love.
Youth Ministry
- Both our Middle School and High School ministries could
use a hand. See Justin if you are
interested.
Theater Arts
- Drama, dance, comedy, music. You name it, we are up for
it! We are always on the lookout for people who can
translate the thoughts of God into a new medium. See Dain
for this one.
In addition you can find more places you might want to jump
